YOUNG INTERNATIONAL ARBITRATION GROUP

The Young International Arbitration Group (YIAG) is an association of arbitration lawyers, sponsored by the LCIA to exchange views on, and to debate, topical issues in international commercial arbitration. Membership of the group is open to arbitration practitioners aged 40 and under. The group holds three symposia a year at venues throughout the world, providing opportunities for debate, discussion and networking.

Symposia have been held in London, Paris, New York, Dusseldorf, Barcelona, Hong Kong, The Hague, Vienna, Miami, Brussels, Hampshire (England), Sydney, Geneva and Singapore.

Membership of YIAG is free of charge and YIAG continues to attract new members at a steady pace. There are now over 1,900 members from more than 80 countries including: Australia, Bulgaria, Cameroon, China, Ecuador, Egypt, Ghana, India, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia and Singapore.

The Group is co-chaired by Domitille Baizeau, Matt Gearing, Melanie van Leeuwen and Shai Wade.

Domitille has dual French/New Zealand nationality and was educated in West Africa, France and New Zealand. She graduated from Canterbury University in New Zealand in 1995. She is admitted to practice in New Zealand and England & Wales as a solicitor and registered in Geneva as a foreign lawyer. Domitille is a is a partner at Lalive in Geneva. She has acted as acted as counsel, secretary to arbitral tribunals or arbitrator in numerous international arbitrations, including large State-investor disputes, both ad hoc and administered and governed by various procedural and substantive laws. Her areas of specialisation include the telecommunications and energy sectors. Domitille is French and English bilingual.

Matt is British and a graduate of Oxford University. He is qualified as a Solicitor in both England and Hong Kong and is a Partner at Allen & Overy, based in the Hong Kong office. Matt has been involved in a large number of arbitrations worldwide, frequently acting as advocate. His experience includes cases before the LCIA, ICSID, ICC and UNCITRAL, in Greece, Pakistan, the former Soviet Union, Trinidad, The Philippines, Hong Kong, the People’s Republic of China, Vietnam, Central America and the Caribbean. Matt is widely published and his works include “Arbitration in Hong Kong: A Practical Guide” and “A Judge in His Own Cause? – Actual or Unconscious Bias of Arbitrators”.

Melanie is Dutch and a graduate from the Erasmus University in Rotterdam. She is a member of the Amsterdam and Paris Bars and is now a Senior Associate at Loyens & Loeff, based in the Paris office. Melanie acts as counsel in international arbitrations in various fields, including international investment, energy, joint ventures, construction & engineering, telecommunications and defence projects. In addition, Melanie has extensive experience in arbitration-related proceedings before the Dutch state courts (annulment, enforcement, consolidation, injunctions). Melanie is fluent in Dutch, English and French.

Shai is an English solicitor and a partner in Reed Smith Richards Butler LLP. He has extensive experience in international commercial arbitration, investment arbitration and international law. Shai is a graduate of the School of Oriental and African Studies and has an LLM from Cambridge University. He served as a staff attorney to the Claims Resolution Tribunal for Dormant Accounts in Switzerland, and later drafted the arbitration procedures for the appeals process of the International Commission on Holocaust Era Insurance Claims.
